Hello. I’m an author and journalist based in Glasgow, Scotland. I have written for titles including The Guardian, Sunday Times, The Times, National Geographic Traveler, Smithsonian Magazine and the Boston Review.
I’m a nine times winner at the Scottish Press Awards and an Orwell Fellow.
This website is intended to be an archive of some of my best work that, mostly, does not appear in either of my journalism collections. I have four books: Steeple Chasing: Around Britain By Church, A Tomb With A View: The Stories & Glories of Graveyards, Daunderlust and The Passion Of Harry Bingo. A Tomb With A View was named the non-fiction book of the year at the Saltires, Scotland’s national book awards. It has also been a Radio 4 Book of the Week. There is an audio version of Daunderlust voiced by Robbie Coltrane.
